MARCH UPDATES
There is a new owner of the Sunriver Village properties a Salem group named Rediscover Sunriver Village, LLC. They have a website with information about the mall and Sunriver and their plans - Website. They gave a presentation on Friday, March 20th at The Great Hall in Sunriver where they discussed the redevlopment of the mall and their current plans. The plan they discussed, covering the next 18 months, focuses on upgrading/updating/rebuilding the existing mall buildings. They stated that at the end of this period they will examine how they will utilize the new Town Center District zoning provisions. Their current 18 month plans to truly revitalize the mall are very promising and exciting. Also their attitudes toward preserving Sunriver's heritage and what makes it special, combined with their stated focus on transparency is extremely promising.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our entire community to take a fresh look at what is truly the best fit for Sunriver. Not constrained by the previous statements that SilverStar was our last and only hope for a revitalized mall. Combined with the significantly lower price that the new owners have paid this should allow for a review of more options that takes into account the desires and concerns of all of Sunriver's owners, businesses and visitors. The initial statements and on-line presentation from Rediscover Sunriver Village are very promising. Let's use this opportunity to work together as a community to provide a new village plan that will benefit all of Sunirver!
Help us to Save Sunriver!
We have set up this website in an effort to preserve Sunriver and what it has stood for over the past 40 years. This true gem of the Northwest is in great danger of being changed forever by the proposed redevelopment of the Village Mall area as first proposed by SilverStar Destinations LLC. We are not opposed to a revitalization of the mall. We are opposed to this dramatic change to the nature of the mall, and indeed to Sunriver, turning it into a condominium complex with minimal ground floor retail. We are joined in our opposition by hundreds and hundreds of Sunriver homeowners (over 1,400 voted against the sale of SROA land to be included in the new development) and by Sunriver Resort the largest single landowner within Sunriver. Despite what the proponents of the mall have stated over the past several months our stance HAS NOT CHANGED since the inception of our group at the conclusion of the first Deschutes County Planning Commission hearing in September of 2007. We have consistently stated that we feel this proposal, which has remained almost entirely unchanged since it was proposed well over a year ago, is TOO MUCH (here is a copy of our first ad that stated exactly that in the December 2007 Sunriver Scene).
We can still influence the scope of the redevelopment by letting the SROA know our concerns and by participating in any forums or other meetings the SROA Board may set up to discuss the Development Agreement that they must sign with the mal property owners before any land can be changed to the new Town Center designation. It is important that we let the SROA Board know that we as owners want to be involved and be allowed to participate in this very important process. We do not want the process to be carried out essentially behind closed doors in "executive sessions" where the public is excluded and no meeting minutes are kept or published. We need to have a more transparent process as we move forward for the benefit of everyone. The most recent process that the Board is undertaking related to the pools issue is an excellent example of how a process can be open and conducive to input. The Board should be commended on their handling of this issue and we hope it is a sign of the process they intend to follow for all future important issues.
Please join us and our supporters. We are made up of owners who have been at Sunriver for over thirty years and less than one, we are full-time and part-time residents, we are parents, grandparents, students, volunteers, accountants, doctors, educators, lawyers, retirees, developers, engineers, gardeners and all proud to be a part of Sunriver.
The Deschutes Board of County Commissioners approved the two Ordinances that creating the Town Center zoning designation and amending the Deschutes County Code to add the definitions as proposed by SilverStar Destinations LLC. The two Ordinances can be found here: 2008-013 & 2008-015. See the Zoning Status page for more information.
